Reaction from Dr Léa Pilsner, Director Energy Policy, at Environmental Defense Fund Europe:
“Delaying MRV obligations won't lower energy prices, improve energy security, or solve the challenges Europe is facing today. The methane regulation didn't create this situation, and postponing implementation won't change it.
The pressure for a delay is largely being driven by parts of the fossil fuel industry, despite repeated claims that they're committed to tackling methane emissions. But what a delay would create is more uncertainty, just as companies are preparing for implementation and contracts continue to be signed. If methane reduction is truly a priority, then delaying the very measures needed to understand and manage emissions is entirely the wrong response.
Importantly, this discussion doesn't appear to reflect any change in France's support for the overall objectives of the regulation or the future import standard. France's continued commitment should encourage other Member States to stay focused on implementation and on finding practical solutions to make the regulation work.
If timelines are extended, the responsibility on Member States becomes even greater. Any additional time must be used to accelerate preparedness and implementation, not to postpone difficult decisions. The focus now should be on providing certainty, maintaining momentum, and delivering on the commitments Europe has already made.”
