Environmental Defense Fund is delighted to welcome former EU Commissioner for Climate Action and former President of the UN Climate Change Conference Connie Hedegaard as a new member of its European Board. Her mandate includes expanding EDF’s presence in Europe and driving an ambitious climate action agenda.

“I am thrilled to join the Board of Environmental Defense Fund Europe at such a critical moment for climate and environmental protection,” said Ms. Hedegaard. “COVID-19 has brought us to a turning point. In the current context, we need new and strong partnerships to reduce global warming and protect communities hit the hardest.”

Ms. Hedegaard is highly regarded across political circles in Europe for her work on climate change and sustainability. A former Minister for Environment, Climate, and Energy in Denmark, as European Commissioner for Climate Action from 2010 to 2014 she led the negotiations towards the adoption of the EU 2030 Climate and Energy Framework and 2050 Roadmap for moving to a low carbon economy.

“I have long admired EDF’s work, its commitment to world-class science and its dedication to working with all players to achieve ambitious environmental goals,” Ms. Hedegaard continued. “With its global perspective, in-house science and economics capability, EDF is perfectly placed to provide strong evidence and pragmatic solutions to inform policy development, and we are ready to work with all interested parties who share the same vision.”

Ms. Hedegaard will work closely with Jill Duggan who was recently appointed Executive Director of Environmental Defense Fund Europe. Drawing on her extensive international career in climate, environment and energy policy, Jill will work with Connie to partner with EU leaders and stakeholders to advance climate ambition, market-based measures, clean energy and recovery policy to forge solutions that protect the environment and ensure a healthy world for all.
